Smear Tests Save Lives: Let’s Talk About It
Smear tests can help save lives, but so many of us put them off. Whether it’s embarrassment, nerves, or just not knowing what to expect – your health is far too important to ignore! ❤️
Here’s why it matters:
🩺 All women in the UK aged 25 to 49 are invited for a screening test every three years and those aged 50 to 65 are invited every five years.
🩺 Smear tests can prevent 75% of cervical cancers by catching early changes.
🩺 Cervical cancer is the third most common malignancy in women worldwide and usually develops in mid-life, with most cases occurring amongst women younger than 50, although more than 15% of cases occur in women older than 65.
The most common symptoms of cervical cancer include:
🩸 Vaginal bleeding that is unusual for you – after menopause, between regular periods, or after intercourse.
💥 Unexplained pain in your lower back or between your hip bones (pelvis).
😣 Pain or discomfort during intercourse.
💧 Changes to vaginal discharge.
Feeling nervous? Here’s what you need to know:
💬 You’re not alone – lots of women feel the same way. Our nurses are friendly and understanding. They are there to help you feel as comfortable as possible!
⏱ It’s over in just a matter of minutes – most people say it’s quicker and easier than they imagined.
🙋 You’re in control. If you’re unsure or need to pause at any moment, just say so – it’s all about your comfort.
🧥 Wear something comfortable such as a skirt or dress if that helps you feel more relaxed. You can also bring a friend or request a chaperone in your appointment to make you feel more comfortable and at ease.
If you’ve been invited for your cervical screening, please don’t put it off. Speak with our friendly reception team to book your appointment. This small step could save your life. 💙
